Is there a city that seems like a cross between LA & NYC?

None exist, but Portland or San Fran are the closest.

I can see San Francisco, especially if you take it as a region (as in the Bay area), which we should. Just the city by itself, no guey, Jose.

Perhaps Oakland as a rougher mix of the both...tons of diversity too, with its hipster up end coming areas reminiscent of Brooklyn/North East LA
