These two states have received a ton of growth in the past 20-30 years or so, more so than other southern states. It's always fascinating to observe the amount of outside transplants that have moved into each state. Out of these two, which would you say holds the most "transplant saturated" image?

NC's transplants may be more evenly populated among the metros but NOVA is probably one of the most transient areas in this country and the military in the HR is not as prominent
but it has a major impact on the area

As a whole, definitely North Carolina.

The I-95 corridor has transplants from Fairfax to Richmond, but you don't really hear about large amounts of transplants in the western portions of Virginia.

It is spread throughout the state of North Carolina from Asheville to Wilmington.

Right, although VA (with more than 50% transplants making up its population) has been receiving them for decades, it's almost an afterthought and not really a component of the state's reputation which always seems to be tied up with history.

On the other hand, reports would have you believe no one lived in NC until the 1980s when transplants finally discovered North Carolina and began moving there in droves. Today, 42% of the state's population is transplants. But even if less transplants make up a proportion of the population of NC, the state has that reputation of being a transplant magnet.

You all might remember the NYT's awesome piece: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2...abt=0002&abg=0

NC for certain I'd say it's more evenly dispersed. In VA its mostly NOVA. and scattered everywhere else.

I am from Long Island, moved to VA.

Most of my NY brethren that I know personally went to SC, then NC, and just myself in VA.

I keep hearing people say Virginia is so full of transplants, but I've often wondered if they have more than North Carolina? Compare Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, and Richmond to the Research Triangle, Charlotte, and Piedmont Triad. Maybe it's just now hitting NC, while it's more old news in Virginia.

So I'm basically asking, do you believe younger generations in say Richmond are less southern than the younger generations of Raleigh? Or is it all basically the same regarding the major metros?

Virginia is full of transplants like myself, the amount of natives I have met in 8 years is a very low percentage. Everyone is from somewhere else but its not really newsworthy, it is what it is.
