There's a certain "big city effect" in this that you can see just by looking at the Midwest - outstate Illinois isn't expensive at all, but the biggest metro in the region is there. Twin Cities are over half of Minnesota's population, so according to this your dollar doesn't stretch as far as others in the region. However, the rural and smalltown prices in Minnesota aren't really different than the ones in Iowa and Wisconsin.

Exactly......Doing something like this by state is misleading due to cost of living variation within states. If this was done by metro area, then it would be interesting.
