In terms of rules and regulations, are city governments more friend or foe where you live? Here in the Cleveland area I've found most cities and suburbs to be very hard to deal with. If you want to move your air conditioner to the side of the house instead of the back, you need to go before the architectural board of review for approval. You can't sell your house in many suburbs without a point of sale inspection by the city, where they require you to correct such things as cracked driveway blocks, or windows that don't open, and you have to put money into an escrow account until the repairs are done. If you are a landlord, you have to pay an annual fee to register your property as a rental. All of these things are costly, and time consuming, and I feel benefit the government more than the citizens it serves. On top of that, the city employees are usually rude, incompetent, and hard to deal with. It feels like they fight you every step of the way when it comes to property rules.
My question is, what are city governments like where you live. Do they have lots of rules and regulations, or few? Are they "fee happy" or not? Are the employees hard to deal with? Does it feel like you have to fight them every step of the way to do anything to your own property?
