What about city by city? I feel like the water in columbus has a very interesting metallic smell and taste(even purified). Maybe it's just me.

Yeah, pretty much every place is going to have different tasting water. It all has to do with where the water comes from, how it's treated, how it's transported, etc. Even bottled water will have differences in taste between companies.

Actually I remember going to Florida and thinking the water was so gross. I love the taste of the water in Chicago in the middle of winter. It's so ice cold and refreshing tasting to me. Growing up elsewhere in the Midwest where it's river water or from underground wells the taste of the great lakes water seemed very good.

Apparently Chicago has some of the best water because it's from Lake Michigan. I've actually noticed water variations between the suburbs. The towns on Lake Michigan tend to have better water. Glencoe, a town on the north shore of Chicago, won second place in some water tasting contest against the whole nation. The town with the best water was somewhere in South Carolina. Much of Northern Illinois gets their water from Lake Michigan and it's interesting how it seems like the closest you are to the lake, the better the water tastes. Maybe the whole state gets water from Lake Michigan, not sure though. Boston actually has really good water. I haven't been to an area in the US that has bad tasting water, there's just places with way better water than others.

I notice the chlorine taste more than anything from tap water in cities all over the country.

During the summer the water in some Dallas-Fort Worth municipalities tastes like mud because of algae.

Yes. Worst water I've ever tasted was in south Florida; it tasted like mold. Best water was in Boston; very crisp and refreshing.

I always thought Chicago water tasted good. New Orleans water to me tasted like chlorine.

Yes, absolutely. The tap water in SoCal is horrendous. I don't mean it's unsafe, it just tastes terrible. We never drink it. One of the first things I notice when I visit relatives in Washington (various regions, all over the state) is that the tap water is actually drinkable.

Memphis has the best tap water I've ever had. No chlorine taste at all. The water comes from a gigantic (as in trillions of gallons) aquifer and not from the Mississippi River.
