Which city has the best architecture? It can be from any era, any design, old, new, classical, modern, futuristic, whatever. Which U.S. City has the best architecture?
Post pictures if you'd like (making sure to follow the forum rules of course).
Chicago has been the home of many great architects including Frank Lloyd Wright. Urban planning was born in Chicago during the Columbian Expo in 1893 so I'd have to agree with our FIB (friendly Illinois brethren) Steve-o regarding Chicago being #1 for architecture. But I would also say that New Orleans would be tied for #1 with Chicago. Other top cities include NYC, San Francisco, Savannah, Charleston, SC, Miami Beach, Boston, and Washington, DC.
Scranton, PA---The Electric City and Home of NBC's "The Office"
Of course I'm biased, but I feel as if the historic architecture in parts of Scranton, Pennsylvania, a city of 72,000 two hours from Philadelphia or New York City, is unbeatable. For a brief period in its history Scranton was the wealthiest city of its size in America due to the boom of the anthracite mining industry. Even now as the city has declined severely in terms of population and economic vitality, most of its historic treasures still remain, making it a wonderful place to saunter off of I-81 to visit.
I like river city architecture such as Pitts, STL, Nati, along with the neighborhoods of Philly and Boston. Of course Charleston, SC is great.
While Chicago has great architecture downtown, I do not particularly like the neighborhood architecture.
I agree with you, with a some precious few exceptions, most Chicago neighborhood architecture isn't much to speak of (and I've been living in various Chicago neighborhoods for many years). While I certainly acknowledge our contribution to the field of architecture, I've lived in 6 distinct chicago neighborhoods over the course of my adult life and only found one of them all that interesting from an architectural standpoint (Old Town).
My favorite cities for architecture (that I've visited) is probably Boston and Washington DC. I've also seen some lovely pictures of Philly, Charleston, San Fransisco and New Orleans.
