I have a friend from Minneapolis, and everywhere I've taken her in the South she comments on how the downtown becomes a ghost town after work and on weekends. Having lived in only various Southern cities in my life, it's just something that seems kind of expected to me...people come downtown to work, and after they go home, there's not much going on. Apparently Minneapolis is different, I guess.

What are some other downtowns that stay active through the night and on weekends? I would think some bigger cities (New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta) and tourist-based cities (New Orleans, Las Vegas) would probably fit this bill, but I'd be especially interested in small to mid-sized cities that have thriving downtowns, as well.

Baltimore isn't small to midsize, but it certainly doesn't turn into a ghost town after 5pm or on weekends.

Yeah there's not many Downtowns in the South that are alive at night, but that is changing. DT Orlando and Raleigh would be exceptions, I think.

For a smaller city downtown Grand Rapids gets busier at night and on weekends.

I think Richmond is lively after hours, just not so much in the heart of the CBD and more in neighborhoods like Shockoe Bottom. Can't really speak for the others.
