What are some small towns(places under 10,000 people) that aren't trendy or popular now, but could potentially become so, in your opinion? What are some things nearby that you think would attract people to this place or these places?
Not sure what your current definition of "trendy or popular" is, but Decorah, Iowa is around 10,000 people and is seeing an explosion of external interest due to it's having 2 world class craft breweries - Toppling Goliath and Pulpit Rock. It's nestled in the heart of the Driftless Area, which includes large parts of the Wisconsin and Minnesota as well. It's a rugged, forested area that offers a major contrast to the surrounding, treeless flatlands. It offers excellent outdoor recreation opportunities including trout fishing, canoeing, hiking, biking on numerous scenic paved trails, and challenging single track mountain biking. Decorah itself is home to Luther College, and has the types of cultural amenities associated with being a small college town, including a well maintained and popular downtown area that caters to tourists.
It's become trendy/popular for people from Minneapolis/Chicago/Des Moines, but I don't think it has much national draw.
Right now, Georgetown has a reputation for being sort of a gritty town with a bit too much crime for a city its size that people have to pass through to get from Myrtle Beach to Charleston and vice versa. However, it does have historical charm and a waterfront on Winyah Bay that feeds out to the Atlantic Ocean so there is potential there. To the north, Myrtle Beach and the outlying towns like Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island are growing and sprawling out so rapidly, and to the south the Charleston Metro is getting so crowded and consequently expensive, that I think Georgetown could become a trendy spot for people who don't want to live in either of those areas but still want to have quick access to them and live on the SC coast.
Perhaps Canton NC, which is about 15 miles west of Asheville. It has the downtown infrastructure already in place and it's geographic location in the mountains and close proximity to Asheville could perhaps translate to overflow of entrepreneurs and residents being priced out of Asheville's somewhat expensive real estate market. https://visitncsmokies.com/canton/

Darien, GA is a riverfront town a few miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. It's a picturesque place with an impressive inventory of late 19th Century houses and churches and great local seafood. No doubt these attributes, along with its proximity to rising star Savannah, make for considerable potential for Darien.
Not sure if Ponchatoula, Louisiana or Ocean Springs, Mississippi are considered trendy or popular already.........both are very historic and quaint especially Ocean SPrings which is next to Biloxi. Ponchatoula is now included within the Greater New Orleans area due to increased growth
