Here is a fun recently posted NY Times article with some criteria and it will give you a list on the best matches for cities in the US that meet your criteria.
My list:
1. Durham, NC (79% match)
2. Atlanta, GA (78%)
3. Charlotte, NC (76%)
4. Sacramento, CA (76%)
5. Stockton, CA (76%)
6. Riverside, CA (74%)
7. Greensboro, NC (74%)
8. Fresno, CA (73%)
9. Baltimore, MD (72%)
10. Raleigh, NC (71%)
According to the NYTimes, I need to live in North Carolina or California! Ironically, this quiz is fairly accurate as I have been looking at a lot of these as I'm planning on moving soon.
I got, Mountain View, CA - Palo Alto, CA, pretty much a ton of places in the Bay Area and Boston (Cambridge, MA). Which is about right in terms with where I’d go if I left DC although I’d also add NYC to that list.
1. San Francisco, CA (100%)
2. Los Angeles, CA (97%)
3. New York, NY (95%)
4. Chicago, IL (95%)
5. Boston, MA (95%)
6. Oakland, CA (95%)
7. Daly City, CA (95%)
8. Newark, NJ (93%)
9. Jersey City, NJ (93%)
10. Isla Vista, CA (93%)
Narrowing to only the cheapest cities:
1. Isla Vista, CA (93%)
2. Passaic, NJ (90%)
3. Baltimore, MD (88%)
4. Hartford, CT (87%)
5. Trenton, NJ (87%)
6. Orange City, NJ (87%)
7. Buffalo, NY (85%)
8. Rochester, NY (85%)
9. Springfield, MA (83%)
10. Albany, NY (83%)
Ha, so my results are not terribly interesting. My entire top 11 was varying sized cities in Cali. I imagine it is because I preferred cool summers, warm winters, sunny, and asian demographics I did have a few other factors but those probably tipped the scales for Cali.

Thanks, but I did actually try both of those things yesterday and it was still paywalled. Today I decided to use a different device and it worked

Yeah, I think they’re using the device IP actually so incognito doesn’t work with NYT.

I changed the price criteria for $-$$$ and that got rid of almost all the California options I was getting.
My criteria:
- Mountains
- Jobs
- Cool summers
- Democrats
- Less snow
- Sunny
- Trees
- Racial diversity
- Young adults
Realistically I won’t live anywhere out west anymore unless it’s the PNW. The options I was getting in inland CA were more realistic to what I would pick if I were to move there. That selection also took Seattle and Portland off my list (price limitation).
I put in my criteria and my No.1 result was Key West Fla. I've vacationed there a few times and love it. I never thought of it for retirement, but now, maybe I should.
