I have resumed traveling but only domestically this year. One thing I have noticed in NYC and San Diego (can’t recall but believe Santa Monica/LA also) are the makeshift outdoor dining “sheds” (or whatever you call them) on streets that have popped up in response to Covid.

I live in Miami which already had outdoor dining on sidewalks but I’ve not seen these makeshift “sheds” in the street, in large measure because the state has put business first and allowed indoor dining earlier than most other cities.

What other cities besides the ones I mentioned also have these outdoor, street dining arrangements?….are they temporary or permanent where you live?

Everywhere, literally, the entire dining scene moved to the sidewalk, and to be honest, I rather like it.

Maybe I should’ve asked which cities, besides Miami, don’t have it (talking in the street, not just common patio dining on sidewalks)

In Albuquerque, the city put up some money to help restaurants set up outdoor dining. I think they should keep them but some places took them down after it looked like it was no longer required. Now they wish they hadn't.

I am not sure how you are describing Miami's scene, but Miami Beach has expanded into the street from the regular sidewalk experience.

In Raleigh, there are various versions of it as well: some more enclosed than others. In many cases, there's the orange/white temporary "Jersey barriers" used to establish the boundary of the expanded dining.

Once a month, Raleigh closes Fayetteville Street in the center of the city on the first Friday for dine out Raleigh. The city makes the parking decks downtown free for the evening, sets up tables and chairs, and diners can either order take-out from nearby restaurants and find a table, or dine at restaurants on this stretch of the street that have table service for a certain segment of them.

I've seen this when driving through downtown Sheboygan, Wisconsin this summer. Looked semi-permanent.
Might be doing some things like that to gear up for the Ryder Cup this year.

As far as I am concerned, I find it hard to believe that there is any major city NOT doing this.

Haven't seen much of this in Austin, mainly because most places already had large patios for outdoor dining. I have seen a few places convert parking spaces into additional outdoor dining. e.g. https://goo.gl/maps/rtQDhCSoFidW2sn89
