I'm curious because a surprisingly high amount of people on here say that Texas isn't even the South, or that only Houston and Eastward are.

I personally think of all of the above as being part of the South, but I'd like to hear your opinions.

A lot of Texas homers will say that Texas is impossible to categorize and is its own region. I think that all of the Great Plains states have Western and Midwestern/Southern halves.

East Texas isn't Southern in the same way that Alabama is, but neither is East Tennessee.

The only traditionally Southern part of Texas is the northeastern portion corresponding to the Piney Woods.

I thought it was the Virginia homers who downplayed how Southern Texas is.
That being said, you don't consider the Oklahoma panhandle to be the South?

I don't consider any of those cities the South. I would say that Houston and Dallas are both on the borders of the South, but I still consider them not-southern in the same way as NoVA or Cincinnati.

These cities to the west are, to me, apart of a separate region of the country than the deep south.

Lots of liberals on this board who want to disassociate themselves from the south, as if the coasts and the northeast are more sophisticated. It's embarrassing. It's not like this in real life.

None of Texas is "the south". Sure, in comparison to western and northern states, it's more southern than any other region. But compared to the south, it's different.

Texas is it's own animal. It's always been unique and original. Wake up.

Based on the cities you listed, here is how I think they culturally fit in:

Houston - Unquestionably Southern
Dallas - A mix of the South and the Great Plains
Austin - Some southern characteristics but not southern.
San Antonio - Not Southern
Odessa/Midland - Some Southern Characteristics
Lubbock - Some Southern characteristics (like cotton) but more apart of the Great Plains
Amarillo - Not Southern

Texas is Texas. It's a border state too and it's huge. My gosh, people, this is common sense. I don't understand all the constant bickering back and forth about whether metro areas in Texas are southern or not. They're Texan. Of course the further east you go in the state of Texas (and closer to the, well, the DEEP SOUTH), you will find more southern influence.

But goodness, I AM from the Deep South (and grateful to be so) and I've lived in NE Texas for 25 years (grateful for that as well) and as much as I love Texas, I have yet to find a decent bowl of grits.
