December 2016 will be my 3 year anniversary since moving from NC to AZ and thankfully its been a great experience physically and mentally as I'm very happy I took the leap. But since moving, I cant help but notice the differences in the culture and lifestyle between the 2 areas of the country. People are definitely more "lax' and "chill" here vs back home. Also, it could me, but it also seems people are not as judgmental here as people back at home. I also don't see a lot of that "keeping up with the jones" mentality here, as I saw back at home. Back home it was all about having the latest "McMansion"/Benz. Very refreshing to not see that vibe here. People are very much "outdoorsy" here, as far maintaining a active lifestyle by hiking, biking, running, etc. .. Its definitely a "live and let live attitude" here, as opposed to back at home...Just my 2 cents. Anyone else agree?
Having lived in VA and AZ Totally agree. The big cities in the southwest (Las Vegas and Phoenix) have a much more of a west coast/relaxed vibe. Yes Arizona and the southwest is way different than the southeast but I don't find this shocking in the slightest seeing as these two regions are on opposite sides of the country.

You obviously don't live in North Scottsdale. That's all about keeping up with the Joneses, especially in homes and cars.
You must've lived near a bunch of northeast transplants.
Have to agree with this. NC has changed a lot. The true Southern culture is very laid back. AZ I found to be full of transplants from either California or the Northeast.
OP, what part of NC did you come from? I am guessing the triangle or Charlotte?
The SE has 3 cultural types: Old South, New South & Appalachian. You can't make stereotypes or lump them together, though many people/places will be a blend.

I found people in the Southwest much more chilled than the Southeast. It was almost uncool not to be chilled. People in the East anywhere, NE, SE, are more verbal, too. In the Southwest, less talk and you had more space (metaphorically) to yourself if that makes sense.
