Sustainability of our cities is important obviously and it can be worked at... But please face the present facts regarding the rural areas. No city on earth could even exist without the natural and social resources of rural areas, and yes, still to this day. How long would your city last without rural resources? Be honest, gather logical real world facts, then post. Check out this link and read it completely if you can.
I didn't read it, but coming from an environmental science background in college I can say quite easily that any city resident that thinks their city can exist independently of the:
Soil and the rain that grows the crops and livestock they eat,
the trees that make their paper and wood, and that act as watersheds that clean our streams,
the mineral resources that are mined in the country that provide their metals and fossil fuels
the wind that blows the wind turbines,
and SO much more,
Anyone who thinks that cities can exist indenpendently of the country is a complete idiot thats not even worth talking to.

This.
Someone will come and say the opposite though.
Well If no cites there will be no rural area's unless they just wanted to grow crops for themselves. The Amish lifestyle is not for me.
But that's not the topic. How long would a major city last without access to any rural resources? A week? BTW, its already been determined by some experts that the cities need rural resources more than rural areas need city wealth.
