It's very telling with regard to Hurricane Katrina. You can almost pinpoint where the hurricane's center made landfall and how it affected the populations nearby.

It will be interesting to see the numbers of the new census to see what the recession has done to peoples moving patterns.

Even though Florida's growth has slowed down (another thread says they actually lost population recently), the state is still poised to overtake New York in the rankings in the next decade, assuming the growth returns. Georgia will overtake Michigan even sooner.

On the other end of the scale, North Dakota really seems to be struggling with population growth. Its neighbors are doing OK.

I think the sunbelt's growth will slow down for now but I'm sure it will pick back up.

African Americans in particular are moving back because of increased opportunities, the decline of racism/ abolishment of segregation, and the rapidly expanding economies particularly in North Carolina, Northern Virginia, Orlando, and Atlanta.

Idaho-17%!

Not sure what you meant by the Idaho comment. Please explain...

Idaho is a rapidly growing western state with an economy that has for the most part bypassed the recession. If you are referring to the extremely small community of white supremists, then you are misinformed. That group does not reflect in any way the population of the Gem State. Total media hype.

Hmmm, I didn't know Idaho had a community of white supremacists. Don't take my post negatively, I was just really surprised. Montana and Wyoming have below average growth rates, and Oregon and Washington have moderate growth rates, but Idaho is skyrocketing.

I know Arizona, Nevada, and Utah have high growth rates, but they already have large established cities (Las Vegas/Reno, SLC, and Phoenix). Phoenix, which is apparently the city to move to, probably has the highest growth rate for a city that large in this country. I live on the East Coast so don't know much about Idaho's economy, except that the largest city is Boise, BSU has a blue turf field (where the Terp's won the Humanitarian Bowl earlier this year ), and that the state grows a lot of potatoes.

Why is the population growing so rapidly in Idaho, and where are they moving to?
