I would like to know where the best cities to live for single person (male) over 40 with no kids, that affordable (rent not own). I live in Long Beach, Ca area of Southern CA. And California is near perfect in every way with major exceptions:Crime, traffic, overcrowding, etc. . .
A year and half ago I visited and old friend in Chicago, and It was great! It's on my list , I wonder about other cities as well? Thanks

Define "affordable". It covers such a wide range. Chicago is definitely the right direction, except for the "crime, traffic, and overcrowding" parts. If you are just looking for lower prices and less traffic but you like CA, you could try SE Florida (well, if you don't live in Miami there is less traffic, way less), but the crime and overcrowding aren't much of an improvement, and the climate is a bit of a step down. Tons of singles though, especially around Ft. Lauderdale. If you are looking for a real, walkable city that could be considered "affordable" by any means, then you might want to remove your "Crime, traffic and overcrowding" criteria and consider Chicago.
Affordable is relative. A 1 BR condo in St. Louis might cost you $700-$850/month (sometimes less). Crime can be a problem, though. Traffic's a bit rougher now with part of Highway 40 closed, but the metro is fairly efficient from my own experience. Crime seems to be concentrated in certain areas.
It was recently voted one of the best cities for retirees. Good growth, good economy, a lot cheaper than most cities its size. But not just for the retirees, it has great districts like Short North and the Arena District.
The stereotype is that the further south you go, the more attractive the singles are. I don't know that it's 100% true, but try looking around Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Atlanta, Austin, etc.
If you're looking for something similar to what you have in CA, but cheaper and with less traffic, try Vegas. There are lots of hot, single 40-somethings out here.
That high? Or topping out? Apartments down here start at 750...
It just depends on what's available I think. The Ballpark Lofts a block from Busch said on their site the cheapest apartments are less than $600, but I don't know how available they are.
stltoday.com has some listed as well, but I think it's better to use for buying than for renting, they have more homes for sale listed than for rent, I think.
$750 should get you a pretty nice apartment in St. Louis.
And Forbes listed St. Louis as one of the most affordable cities.
