I was wondering if anyone else has noticed the different atmosphere you find in this forum as opposed to a local forum dedicated to a single city. It seems like all the urban/city lovers and supporters of their hometowns come here (and the city vs. city forum); the local forums meanwhile seem to populated mostly by suburban lovers, city-haters, and people who are completely miserable in their current hometowns. Anyone else noticed this or is it just a California thing?

I notice it on the NY forums too, but it actually isn't that bad there. Michigan's forum is tough on Detroit though.

The local forums seem to be full of Real Estate agents trying to convince people that their area is perfect.

The New York State forum is so overly divided into different sub-forums that no one reads what is going on in other parts of the state. Anyway this is the local forums I sometimes read for NY and the surrounding states:

GENERAL NEW YORK: Hardly anyone answers these and goes right to the NYC or LI forums etc. I see ckhthankgod trying though, lol.

LONG ISLAND: Some normal people with good questions, some CONSTANT complainers who think anywhere off-island is a utopia, some braggers who think anywhere off-island completely stinks. Lots of school district or town questions. Some illegal alien comments. And there is err.... Walter, LI people will know who I am talking about!

NEW JERSEY: Lots of commuting and school district questions. Similar to Long Island but with even more complainers attacking New Jersey. Many complainers seem to be ex-New Jerseyans coming back to attack New Jersey (but I think they are secretly jealous they left New Jersey and cannot afford to come back). Also some negative comments about South Jersey from North Jersey.

CONNECTICUT: Lots of normal people with questions, including good towns with schools and transportation to the city. Normally a pretty postive forum and the people seem to be pretty intelligent. But there are also a few people with a major superiority complex going on. Strangely, I noticed people make a big fuss about the location of a new supermarket, restaurant or pharmacy which is something less seen on other local forums.

MASSACHUSETTS: I expected this forum to be more liberal & elitist (and more anti-NYC metro) than it actually is. For most part it is actually pretty normal questions and usually not too negative. It tends to be Boston metro area centric --- there are not as many posts about W. Massachusetts.

PENNSYLVANIA: Like New York, this forum is also divided into many different sub-forums and I have only read a handful of them, mostly the Northeast Pennsylvania (Pocono-Scranton) one. Mostly normal questions like schools, a decent forum with really no elitist or braggers (that I noticed). Some worry about the future and too many people moving out. Other complain about too many people moving in, especially to parts of the Poconos.

I find the same type of people in both forums. But in the local forums (at least in my local forum) You get to know the people better since it's a smaller group of people who regularly post there, and since most are from the local area you have a better understanding of what they say and you can discuss local topics/issues with fellow residents. I like the US forums too, they're great to compare and discuss different areas across the US and get opinions from people from coast to coast.
