It's interesting the more research you do the more you learn about things that so many people are oblivious to. While housing costs remain higher in Portland the "apartment rentals" between the two cities are not THAT far apart.

One bedroom Portland- $600-650
One bedroom Houston- $550-600

Differential = $50.00

Since I'm looking to rent instead of buy $600 a month falls perfectly within my budget. Furthermore, I'm NOT looking to live in the trendy/ritzy upscale districts so that should alleviate worry offer high cost rent. So anyone considering moving to these cities, if you can swing $600 for rent you'll be in good shape.

Surprisingly I thought there would be a bigger "economic gap" between the cities. Home purchases appears to be it so far. In the end I think it's going to come down to employment prospects, political environment and weather.
