Mr. Zell Miller was one of the good guys. We’ve lost a good man.

Default ZELL MILLER PASSES: Legendary former Georgia governor Zell Miller has passed

Legendary former Georgia governor Zell Miller has passed at age 86 after a battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Governor Miller (who was in office as governor from 1991-1999) is best remembered for his efforts to create the popular HOPE Scholarship to higher education for Georgia residents which was funded by revenue from the Georgia Lottery that he also pushed for and created shortly after taking office.

In addition to creating the HOPE Scholarship and the Georgia Lottery and significantly increasing funding for Pre-K through 12 public education while governor, Miller also originally led the effort to take the Confederate battle emblem off of the Georgia state flag in his first term as governor (...a highly controversial move that almost cost him re-election in 1994) before his successor Roy Barnes successfully did so in 2001.

Because of his achievements as governor and because he held office during a time of explosive and until then-unprecedented economic growth during the 1990's and during the lead-up to the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996, Miller is fondly remember by most as one of the most popular governors ever in Georgia's history, reportedly ending his second term as governor with an 85% approval rating.

After serving as governor, Miller had a controversial stint as a Georgia U.S. Senator for just over one term.

Before serving as governor, Miller served as Lt. Governor and President of the Georgia state Senate for four terms from 1975-1991. Miller became one of the state's most-powerful Lt. governors and Georgia state Senate presidents ever to serve in that office.

Sad news, indeed; he was a great man. The Democrat Party's attempts to marginalize him for speaking his mind and maintaining his ideological integrity played a major role in my own alienation from the party.

Yep.

Zell Miller used to often say that "I didn't leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me."

The differences that he had with the Democratic Party were differences that tens-of-millions of longtime Democratic voters had with the party throughout large swaths of the country, particularly throughout the South and the lower Midwest.

...Irreconcilable differences with the Democratic Party that led to those tens-of-millions of Southern and Midwestern one-time Democratic Party voters eventually becoming Republican Party voters for good.

The Georgia World Congress Center in Downtown Atlanta sent out a tweet with a condolence for Zell Miller because of the strong support on behalf of the State of Georgia that Miller gave to expanding the facility and growing Atlanta's now-massive convention industry during his time as Lt. Governor and Governor.

Because of his strong support of expansion of the facility and Atlanta's convention industry, Miller is memorialized at the Georgia World Congress Center with a corporate conference center in his honor, the Zell Miller Corporate Conference Center at the Georgia World Congress Center.
