It is a great sentiment however there is a great deal of distance between being on your knees and standing upright. For example, Thomas "Toivi" Blatt was a Polish Jew who was subjected to all the degradation that Jews experienced under the Nazis, including being interned at the Sobibor death camp. Throughout that experience one could argue that Mr. Blatt lived on his knees, well at least until April 28, 1943 when he and other inmates rose up in a violent revolt that led to the escape of over 200 other prisoners. At that moment Mr. Blatt chose to risk dying on his feet. So do you live on your knees for a while until your knees hurt so bad that standing up on your feet at the risk of dying becomes the only logical choice. Of course Mr. Blatt could have chosen to die on his feet well before ever having to go down on his knees. He could have stood up the Nazis and shot on the spot. So at the end of the day I would say that living on your knees may be the best choice, until standing on your feet isn't an automatic death sentence.
Another old saying:
"He that fights and runs away, May turn and fight another day; But he that is in battle slain, Will never rise to fight again."
The answer is...it depends. Different people have different views. Some folks define paying taxes as living on your knees for example. While I have no issues with it. Others define it as the top .01% getting all the money.
So really its not a cut and dried question as it depends on your values.
An often quoted question. What do you think? I think I'd rather die on my feet.
There are plenty of people out there who will gladly send you on your way. Tough question. There's a threshold and rarely a situation that people can't pull themselves out of.
Is it better to die on your feet or live on your knees?
I think it's better to live not giving credence to false dichotomies.
But that's just me.
YMMV
