I've been feeling this way for quite some time now but I recently read that the US has 5% of the world population and 25% of the incarcerated population. I also read that Sweden has closed the vast majority of it's prisons. Hmmmm. Maybe it's time to change things a bit.
I don't have all the answers but a couple of things I would like to see change are:

Dylan Roof and James Holmes for example...they did it. They are worthless and needs to die. now. Do not give them a lawyer, do not tie up the judicial system with their sorry butts, just put a $1 dollar bullet in the back of their heads and move on. When there is 100% certainty that someone did something worthy of the death penalty, give it to them.
Bring chain gangs back.
Better forms of rehab for non-violent crimes and lessen sentences for marijuana.
If you have a teardrop tattoo on your eye...that's reason enough to be shot.
When coming in contact with those that do not care about life (i.e. - that guy that taped the dogs mouth shut, the guy that left his child in a hot car with evidence to show he did it on purpose, the guy that dragged a dog behind his car) kill them. They do not understand and they are not the types of people I want in my world, get rid of them already.
Take that part out of the constitution that says there will be no cruel and unusual punishment...I say the crueler the better. The guys that raped and murdered the 3 yr old boy should be tied naked on a flatbed truck and driven through that boys neighborhood.
I know most of the above is fantasy but we do need some rules changed. What would you like to see?

Somehow I don't think Sweden was able to close their prisons by doing what you suggest but I agree with what you say.

There are people in our society that are career criminals. There are some whose crimes are so heinous that they should be put down as soon as the details are sorted out. One of the greatest things about our criminal justice system is the near never ending appeals. There are cases where the criminal is guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt but they plead not guilty?
Some of these guys would plead guilty but their lawyers convince them not to.
There are plenty of people who admit their guilt but they still tie up the system.

Anyone convicted of terrorism, treason, first degree murder should simply be put down and save the rest of us further grief.

You plant a bomb at a marathon, you shoot up a theatre.... I dont' care what your mental capacity was in my mind you checked yourself out of humanity and should be put down.

Drugs are a different story. There are the users and the dealers. The dealers should be put down. The users need help.

Something is going to give in this country and someday the criminals will be running the streets and good people won't have a choice. Perhaps we should start by stopping glorifying violence in movies, music, video games?

I agree with you OP and I'm sure this thread will catch much flak but the really sick pups should be put down to relieve us all of their misery.

i used to think that media (movies, games, music, tv, internet) had no bearing on behavior. I'll admit that I was wrong. You are what you ingest. Music, IMO, is currently at the top of the list in dragging the country down. It seems like every top-of-the-charts songs are about sex. If your song has the word booty in it, it will sell. And the violence and sex everywhere is just crazy. I just read that 70% of 10 year old boys are watching porn on a regular basis! I don't know where all this is headed but it's not gonna be pretty.

BTW, I wasn't saying Sweden did what I was suggesting, I was just pointing out that they ARE doing something that works and perhaps we should do a study on that.

I think it's true that our spirits are filled with what we fill them with. I can't see how anyone can rationalize that the mind makes a subconscious distinction between the propaganda masquerading as education and propaganda masquerading as entertainment. Not to mention so-called "edutainment."

Even when it's "factual," volume and repetition takes its toll on how the mind perceives quantity. People have become consumers of outrage, and there are peddlers willing to sell us outrage, day in and day out. "Listen to this! This is outrageous!" and people seem to hunger to be outraged over something that isn't even part of their own lives. "I'm going to listen to this guy because I enjoy being outraged over stuff that's never even happened to me."

Of course a daily diet of this stuff has a cumulative effect on our spirits. Of course it does.

It's not fantasy but Saudi Arabia. Perhaps you need a change of residency?

I would like to see the constitution take seriously again. I would like for congress to do what congress was intended to do; make the laws. I would like to see the president do what he was intended to do; enforce the laws. I would like for the supreme court to stop making laws; that is NOT their job. It is not the job of the president either.

Our forefathers were inspired by God in making a government that works like a top but it only works if everybody know what their job is supposed to be. Right now we have a president acting like a dictator, the supreme court is upholding his inappropriate actions as well as other actions that are out of control, the states are being stripped of all power and the congress is trying to keep their seats and doing what they think will get them re-elected instead of doing what is best for the country.

Americans once were like “killer bees.” When trespassed upon, the victim was not left to his own feeble devices. The community and the servant government were his allies, swarming to inflict justice (often harsh) in response to his injury.

“In Europe a criminal is an unhappy being who is struggling for his life against the ministers of justice, whilst the population is merely a spectator of the conflict; in America he is looked upon as an enemy of the human race, and the whole of mankind is against him.”
- - - Tocqueville, Alexis de, 1805-1859. . . Democracy in America, volume 1

They incorrectly called the fees for the healthcare law a tax thus making them agree with the constitution. Congress had stated it was not a tax. Supreme court and the president illegally changed the healthcare law wording. This mess would have been over with without the illegal changes because the law was not workable as is. It should have gone back to congress to fix it or ditch it. Both the president and supreme court overstepped their bounds in dealing with this mess that is placing unfair penalties on those who can least afford it.
