You gotta love the ignorance of the Hollywood firearms prop departments. One of my favorite examples of shooting techniques is the gangster wannabe sideways style of shooting a pistol. On the shooting range we would tell a shooter using that style that he couldn't hit a bull in the azz from ten feet.
That potato on the barrel of a rifle is an example of Hollywoods total lack of knowledge about firearms. With a lot of high powered rifles or handguns that potato trick might cause the gun to blow up and at a minimum bulge the barrel resulting in a ruined weapon.
The two liter bottle over the barrel of a .22 rifle might silence the report of the shot significantly but the sight picture would be horrible and the bullets deflection passing through the plastic bottle would ruin accuracy. At least it probably wouldn't ruin your gun or kill you like the potato idea.
I guess another use could be as a planter for small plants like some of those mini cactuses. If you use it length-ways then you have to make sure it doesn't roll but still, not a bad planter.
Makes a good mini-greenhouse for starting seeds or growing sprouts. Leave the top on then cut about an inch above the perforated bottom, out in soil or sponge, seeds, and some water. Put the top portion back on then place in a window and you are ready to go.

Some show actually used a potato as a silencer? I remember the 2-liter silencer trick was used in the movie universal soldier. That would be a good one for the mythbusters.
I can't believe no-one has mentioned cutting off the tops and using them as funnels for adding fluids to your car etc.
If you have chickens in a pen. Take the bottle and about 5 inches from the bottom cut a hole out about big as your palm. Use some string wire etc to wrap around the neck right below there the cap fits. Hang it about three inches off the ground and your chickens can drink but the water wont get as dirty as fast as those fountain water jars.
