Looks like San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels is looking to develop the Reynolds Building into condos and a boutique hotel. Good news! What a great building.
Great news for Winston Salem . now the triad will have two major luxury brand hotels. Winston is getting a kimpton and Greensboro is getting a wyndham. both downtown!
I'm excited that it's a company like Kimpton. I've stayed at a few if their hotels before and they definitely are a different type of hotel chain, in that they strive for an independent boutique feel in each of their hotels. The Allegro in Chicago doesn't feel like the Palomar in SF. And while they are not inexpensive, they don't tend to strive for the highest possible price point, which is important in a midsize market. I think they can do cool things with that gorgeous building without stripping it of its character. I don't think that could be said of any old hotel chain.
I hope it goes through. This was similar to a plan looked into about a year or so ago, right?
The article makes it seem like this one is a done deal (reno firm in place, surveys done), but I suppose nothing is done until it's DONE. The last effort was headed up by the owner of the O Henry and Proximity (quaintance weaver), but I don't know if that deal got as far as this one did.
What exactly will be the name of the hotel be? I looked up the company and all of the hotels either have unique independent names or is called Hotel Monaco or Hotel Palomar. In Winston-Salem's case I would prefer a unique independent name. Something associated with the building, RJR or the city's hostory. Upscale independent hotel names with local themes have had success in Greensboro, Think "Proximity Hotel" "O'Henry Hotel".
More lofts, apartments and parking decks being built in downtown Winston Salem. Whoop-de-doo. What else is new?
Crap on it if you want. I'm just excited that (1) that beautiful building will be put to use again and (2) that we'll have another hotel option downtown that isn't totally vanilla.
