The triad area will be getting an overlay area code, 743, as area code 336 will exhaust new numbers by the third quarter of 2016. A dare for enacting area code 743 remains to be announced.

The overlay, as is usually done nowadays, is much better IMO than splitting an area and requiring many to change their area code. I'm used to 10 digit dialing from living in various other areas that required it.

Just when I got use to dialing 7 digits...lol...Charlotte has had 10 digit mandatory dialing for 20 years now...guess I will have to retrain my brain for 10 digit dialing. I heard the new area code will start in 2016...not sure what month though.

At least the new area code isn't 9-1-2.

How did North Carolina end up with not one but two area codes (919 and 910) that are way too close to 911?!! I'm sure there have been times when someone mistakenly has dialed 911 instead of 919 or 910 when trying to make a call.

I wonder if Charlotte's calling area has to do with York and Lancaster counties in South Carolina being included.

Area code 803, which has been split twice, will be close to exhausting available numbers within two to three years. I do not know if growth in Aiken and Edgefield counties, in the Augusta, Georgia calling area, or York and Lancaster counties are sufficient enough to warrant a split. It does not need to become a duplicate of Georgia's area codes 706 and 762 overlay split by the Atlanta calling area.

IIRC, You'll be able to use 10 digit dialing now, but it won't be mandatory if calling within your own area code for six months.
