Would anyone like to help me out with a Carfax report if I provide the VIN? The car's from a private seller who won't pay for the report.

The last time I purchased a used car I paid for the car fax. Car dealers usually provide the Carfax. It's not very expensive.

Ah, some things never change. Before Carfax people wouldn't spend the money to have a mechanic look at potential used car purchase and now Carfax has made it easier and people still won't spend the money.

Carfax is a bunch of crap. It is only somewhat factual. For instance, I owned a 2001 Lincoln. I was rear ended at a stop light and there was over $12000 dollars in damage. I took it to a dealer auto body shop. The damage never showed up on Carfax.

Take the car that you're considering to a qualified mechanic.

First, this thread is old as heck.

Second, having someone with a Carfax or similar plan check on the vehicle is helpful for identifying the cars you can disregard without wasting the time to drive 20-30 minutes, or an hour or two, to go look at the car, take it for a spin and then to a mechanic. When I was last shopping for a car, I had people who had paid for unlimited Carfax reports help me out to disregard more than 5 of the cars I was considering (in return for a couple of dollars). That saved several hours of my time.

I get the impression from the above posts that these people aren't aware that people pay for the unlimited Carfax plans and then go on forums like this to help others so that they don't need to pay the exorbitant cost of Carfax reports. And yes, they are quite expensive. Some of you sound as if $40-100 is so insignificant that you don't even consider it an expense.

It's yet another contemporary example using collaboration to pay for an item or service only what it's actually worth.
