My parents house was built in the late '60's early 70's ( around 68). There are no problems with windows not opening, no problem with cracks in the drywall that I can see but there are cracks on the interior side of the door frame in the living room ( leading to the porch) and the den ( leading to the garage). On the outer side of the door frame there is no cracking - concrete extends about 4 to 5 inches from the door frame. There have been several problems over the years with the plumbing in the kitchen and the bathrooms. They recently had one of the bathrooms remodeled and the second bathroom is next - currently not recommended for use (toilet issues) but can be used at your own risk.
The house is surrounded by trees they appear to be dogwoods and pine trees mostly and some shrubs - not sure if they are Red-tip Photinia (known for drying out concrete) or not they are kept trimmed so no red leaves or flowers to be seen ( use to produce white flowers I remember as a kid and what appeared to be red berry like foliage).
My question is this - I would like to install hardwoods in the living room/dining room/kitchen/den area (all these rooms are on one end of the house separated by a single wall). Could the cracks around the door way in these two areas simply be cosmetic issues that can be easily remedied or do they sound like foundation issues? I haven't had anyone take a look yet wanted to get some feedback and some base understanding before I get ripped off. I have no knowledge of construction or foundation I have done some research but am far from an informed consumer.
Any suggestions/recommendations would be so greatly appreciated.

With the age of the house your observation sounds like harmless settling which can be expected. You really never know until you start tearing things apart.
