Usually this time of year I take out my pansies and replace with begonias. I was thinking I would try another flower but I hadn't had much luck with other flowers I tried.

What does good in this neck of the woods? This is for out by the mailbox so the area gets a lot of sun.

Also where do you usually go to buy your plants? I used to go to Country Boys but I've come to realize that you get about the same quality at Lowes or Home Depot for less money.

Thanks.

Our go-to summer flower to replace pansies is the petunia. Similar shape, colors, etc. There are lots of other choices.

For shrubs and trees, I highly recommend Easley Nursery on S.C. 153. They have more variety, more quantity, overall better quality plants, and lower prices than most nurseries in the Upstate. Another place to check out is Lichtenfelt Nursery on Anderson Ridge Road.

I like vinca. It looks a bit like impatiens but takes the direct sun.

Ice Plant. Iceplant, Ice Plants, Ice Plant, Ground Cover, Ground Cover Plants

It's a succulent that grows an explosion of flowers in full sun. I just saw it for the first time recently and was blown away.

The leaves feel like elastic if you pull them and the flowers are amazingly colorful. Grows very low like a carpet.

Here are a few more to consider:

Snapdragons: They are colorful and low maintenance. The dwarf varieties grow from 2 to 10 inches tall:

Snapdragon | Garden Guides

Verbena: Very pretty delicate flowers in various colors:

HGIC 1175 Verbena : Extension : Clemson University : South Carolina

Portulaca: these are very colorful, and quite low growing. They are extremely heat and drought tolerant:

Annual Flowers: Portulaca grandiflora

Also Skyliner: thanks for the tip about Easley Nursery!
