The latest plans will be unveiled publicly today at Beck Academy. The upgraded interchange apparently will feature South Carolina's first four-level highway junction. Construction on the project is expected to begin in 2014 and last three years.

Long overdue. They can't get started fast enough. I am suprised more trucks don't overturn on those dangerous sharp ramps now. For comparison, 85/26 in Spartanburg is a 3 level and 85/285 in Atlanta is a 5 level stack.

At one time there was no 385. Before it was built 276 ran from Mauldin to the I-26 (even number)junction. When 385 was built it incorparated 276 starting at East Standing Springs Road and thus we had an East/West road with a odd number. The signs even say so. Your government at work.
I think the I-385 S to I-85 N and I-85 N to I-385 N flyovers will be different than what that rendering shows. I think SCDOT is going for a perfect four-level stack interchange here, same with NCDOT at I-26/I-40/I-240 in Asheville.

Nope. It will be exactly like it shows in the links. Trust me. Four level interchange left to right not top to bottom.

Because it actually IS I-385 north and south. The signs don't say east and west Any odd numbered freeway is a north/south freeway and any even numbered freeway is an east/west freeway, regardless of what direction the roads appear to be going. 385 is more northwest/southeast so could go either way.

The odd and even rule applies to two digit mainline interstate routes only. This means I-26 and I-40 are East/West routes. I-95, I-85, and I-5 are North/South routes.
For three digit auxiliary interstates, that rule does not hold. For these routes, if the first digit is odd it indicates a spur route that does not connect to an interstate at both ends of the route. If the first digit is even it indicates the route is a beltway or bypass that connects to an interstate at both ends of the route. The final two digits indicate which interstate the spur or beltway connects with. These three digit auxiliary routes can be east/west or north/south. There are exceptions but those are the general guidelines.
The US highway system (i.e US 1) follows a similar but slightly different set of rules.
Not replacing the bridges on Woodruff with ones that can have traffic meet with ONE light instead of two is a big blunder.
