Facts from the S.C. Department of Commerce:

- The $1 billion capital investment represents one of the highest initial investments in S.C. history.
- State officials expect 500 new manufacturing jobs to be created in Spartanburg County.
- Based in Tokyo, Japan, Toray is the largest producer of carbon fiber in the world.
- The facility will be a major supplier of advanced materials to the aerospace industry.
- The new facility will be located on about 400 acres along Highway 290 in Moore, with access to I-26 and I-85.

I wonder how much exporting they will be doing and if the inland port helped lure them to the Upstate?

Toray is going be located on Moore-Duncan Highway next to the CSX underpass. As the inland port is located along Norfolk Southern's line, you will see more local truck traffic. A spur line to the CSX mainline would likely be created providing direct access to Charleston's port.

Because they are a supplier to Boeing, I assume they will be sending much of their early production to Charleston.

So the inland port was the key to build here other than say closer to the Boeing plant?

I'm sure it was due to a more skilled manufacturing labor force and land.

I do not know if the inland port is the sole reason Toray is locating in Moore. Located near I-26 provides a direct route via interstate to Charleston to move supplies and products. Locating on SC-290 does provide direct access to the inland port and I-85.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out. Although this article only mentions the Toray plant in Mexico I would think the new $1 billion plant 10 miles down the road from BMW Manufacturing will be involved there as well.

Another factor may possibly be that there is some aerospace in the Winston Salem NC area. The upstate may be an ideal central location with the Greer inland port, SC aerospace, and W-S, etc., taken into consideration.
