Still annoys me when these articles talk about Greenville being a small town of 67,000 people. It's so misleading. I know that's the population within the city limits but it's well over 500,000 in what I would consider the metro area. (Over a million if you use the CSA)
It's not really a small town. I'd say it's closer to a medium sized city.
It's a balancing act for media...these type of articles are looking to highlight smaller cities/towns. Specifically this article was looking for places with population <100,000. So, in order to get the press for this article, you present the city based on one definition of population.
But I agree that it is misleading overall. The reason Greenville has so much going for it culturally is that it is NOT actually a small town of 67,000 people.
Lots of cities/towns of this size and with the city limit types that Greenville has struggle a little bit in personal identity at this growth point. You lose a little "charm" or "bragging rights" when you start moving toward embracing the larger population numbers or it changes the way people perceive you from when you could say you were a really cool small town. You also now have a different set of cities to be compared against. Kind of like moving up a weight class.
However, this is all just media and press and the way people categorize stuff. I can affirm that Greenville has a very positive reputation anywhere I have gone where people find out I lived there.

The article says it punches 10 times above its weight. There is a reason for that.
