Does anyone know what are the "top 30 destinations" or "30 most popular destinations" for GSP referenced in this article? Most of the data I have found shows data for direct flights only, not final destination after connection.
Wow. Congrats GSP.. that some good news.. I didn't know you could go from GSP to Denver, Vegas and Miami direct.. that is impressive.. If it lands a direct flight to Germany.. that could increase travel to Europe in general for SC residents since you could connect to low cost European airlines once you get over there. Not having to connect twice on an international flight is huge........
It will interesting to see the price point for a direct flight from GSP to Deutschland.
I know CLT has a a flight to Frankfurt on American and there's also a flight to Munich on Lufthansa. Supposedly the Frankfurt flight is the 7th busiest international flight out of CLT with 140,000 passengers annually. I wonder how many of those are from the Upstate?
Of course, after a price point is picked, then you have weigh the cost of having to drive to Charlotte and sit in traffic (depending on the time of day), park your car, etc. Obviously if the price is cheaper/same/or within $100 then it would probably be a no-brainer to fly out of GSP, but what if it's like $300-$400 more than flying out of CLT, is that worth the convenience?
I guess if they are excepting to get mostly executives from BMW and other automotive supply companies using the flight, the price doesn't matter if the company is paying the bill, right!
I'm guessing GSP is trying to land Lufthansa for this service, likely with BMW doing their part behind the scenes. I doubt GSP would be able to get a US based airline to go for a point to point international route. The other nice thing is this could potentially open up some new 1 layover intl destinations that might normally require 2 layovers if starting from GSP.
Hard to believe they could consistently fill planes, but who knows. When I was stationed in Germany and flying to Frankfurt, there were always a bunch of options to connect through Charlotte, Atlanta, Dulles, Cinci etc. I wouldn't think there would be enough executives that would pay a premium to shave a few hours off the trip.

It's more than just executives. There are plenty of people here from Germany that are regular workers. And it isn't just BMW. I have a friend who works for a German software company that has a location here in Greenville. Only one person in the whole office is an American. When I mentioned this may be coming, they were elated. They can't stand all the connections (I think it's usually more than one).

I would even consider a European vacation again with this connection. I have slept on the floor of Newark more times than I care to think about with the many failed connections.
