Keowee River is the name of the development, according to this article (http://www.upstatetoday.com/news/2009/aug/14/keowee-river-development-unveiled/ - broken link) from UpstateToday.com on Thursday. The project will span over 774 acres and include lots of great amenities. The focus will be on active adult lifestyles, adventure tourism and the environment. The developer expects to eventually create 2,000 jobs at the center.
This is really great news for Oconee county and the Upstate. I hope it does not take the 18-20 years to complete like some articles I read about it. But it is understandable in this economy that the developers want to move slowly.
I've heard there are people that don't want it to come in. I saw a bumper sticker saying no to high rises, referring to this. But the jobs could be a help, I live here and it's pretty much jobless.
If they're merely worried about highrises, then I don't think they should be against this project. None seem to be planned as part of Keowee River, unlike the initial plans for MonteLago (http://www.marick.net/realestate_montelago.php - broken link), which faced strong public opposition and unfortunately never broke ground.
Pretty sure the proposed changes in Oconee county zoning regarding building height in a buffer zone around Keowee and Jocassee passed so I do not think there will be any highrises allowed in this or any other development.
Well it seems like it should be a nice development but don't you think 20 years is a pretty long time period for a development like this one?
