I strongly disagree with the thumbs down in the title of this post. If the American public ever learned what was actually crossing the borders we would have the most secure borders in the world. Sure there are illegals here that are trying to earn a paycheck to better themselves. There are also gang members, child rapists, kidnapped children sold in to sex slavery as early as 5-6 years old, the mexican army constantly escorting drugs in to our country and firing at our Border Patrol with machine guns, etc...

Research the gang Mara Salvatrucha 13, AKA MS13, and tell me if you want them living next door to you and your family. From my experiences with them, I will tell you that I don't want to be any where near them. This gang kills people for the fun of it. Bump in to their car at a red light, wear the wrong color shirt, look at them the wrong way and you're dead. You will never see your family again and some punk will now get a tear dropped tattoo.

Before you go off and say that this is a small percentage of people, I agree. I don't know how the government can determine who is a good illegal and who is a bad illegal. Do you think Mexico will tell the US that we have a bad illegal knowing that we will ship him/her back to Mexico? No, they don't want to ever see the person again and will lie and say that the person doesn't have a record knowing that they will live happily ever after in a city like Atlanta, Dallas, or maybe Greenville, SC...

Here are some random links that I just googled if you would like to read what is realy crossing our borders:
MS13 Gang
CNN.com - Transcripts
Suspected gang members arrested in North Carolina - CNN.com

I just skimmed those links but what I did read was accurate.

Also check out this book if you don't think we need stronger borders:
Amazon.com: Barbed Wire Border (9780976172611): Books
This book is fiction but I promise it will leave you with a sense of uncertainity.

Ok my rant is over.

Also, I'm confused. Does the OP seriously think the Arizona thing was a bad idea? Talk to someone who came here legally, went through the process to become a citizen, and ask them what they think about illegals. Then you can have an opinion.
I have friends who came here legally, and were forced to leave because the system doesn't work. These were hard working nice people, who are still trying to find ways to get back here. These are people with kids who grew up here and can't even speak their native language so they can't attend school where they are at now. These are people who did nothing but work and pay their dues while they were here for 7 years, And then booted out of the country with only a 30 day notice. The system doesn't work and this bill isn't going to help anything.

I know of an English(??) family that had this happen, too.... IDIOTIC!! The U.S. system needs a TOTAL overhaul.

BUT... That just proves the validity of what AZ did. The Federal Government obviously doesn't have the wherewithall to do its job properly. Do you, or does anyone else, think they EVER will? Something must be done - aside from the litany of things previously mentioned about our embarrassingly porous border, what more of a Welcome Mat do TERRORISTS need than this in order to pour into the country? It is very easy for them to mix into the masses flooding in.

Nobody can prove citizenship on a whim, that is not what the Arizona law requires. Instead, it requires proof of residency status, which in Arizona and South Carolina only requires a driver's license.

Instead, this law simply makes the federal statute that already exists and makes it a state crime as well. ICE does not bother with the individual illegal immigrant, they want the big tamale such as that chicken plant here in Greenville where hundreds of illegals were detained. Since the federal government refuses to act, the states are simply allowing their law enforcement agencies to pursue illegal immigration cases.

my simple question, what does this bill solve regarding what I said? the answer I already know, absolutely nothing.(I won't comment on the terrorist quote, you can probably guess my feelings on that.) this isn't going to force the federal government to move any faster than it already is, and its going to cost us more money than its going to save, there is no point to it.

I completely understand this, but at the same time I can'r understand why we would try to re-enforce laws that do not work in the first place, and waste time and resources on it as well when we have so many other pressing concerns in our state right now, like education that is facing a 15 million + dollar budget deficit next year.

Fear mongering? Interesting viewpoint noodles. I feel that I'm simply pointing out facts that I have seen first hand. The people of the southwest border towns know all about these stories but yet the national media doesn't report on them because of views like yours. I guess bad news might mean bad ratings? I also feel that this is not something the American public should look the other way and hope it goes away.

Just so you know I worked with the Border Patrol and separated from them after being shot. A bullet proof vest saved my life. As far as the shooter, he ran back to Mexico and surprisingly was never caught. At the time there was a $10k bounty for anybody that would kill a Border Patrol Agent. My life almost became a paycheck to some punk.

I've seen things that people here would be horrified to know about.

The immigration problem is far from just losing jobs to IAs. It's a matter of national security. It's protecting this country so that everybody is safe. It's protecting this country so that people can have their own jobs, lives, and even view points like yours.

yes fear mongering, do you know the definition? Using fear to get a point across? I.E. the post quoted above.

If you worked with border patrol you probably saw the worst of the worst, it would probably give someone a very unfavorable opinion of the situation, and I totally understand that.

I just don't understand exactly what this bill is going to do other than aggravate the situation. No one has been able to tell me thus far how it will deter immigrants or save the state money, which we sorely need.

If a more vigorous effort by state and local law enforcement is underway to quell the tide of illegal immigration, then that alone would be a major deterrent. It won't end the problem, but will definitely help, much like increased monitoring of the Internet for sexual predators helps our children avoid becoming innocent victims by apprehending the guilty and deterring others from attempting the same. I for one welcome the opportunity to witness our state become proactive in fighting this massive wave of illegal activity.

again, what exactly about this bill is going to deter immigrants, that is my question
