I'm a natural brunette w/ dark brown hair but started getting grey hair in my 30s. For almost 20 years, been getting permanent hair color done to cover up the grey (actually now it's coming in completely white!) My hair grows very fast, almost an inch a month, so the white roots start showing after just 3 weeks. When my hair was much shorter, I was coloring it myself at home most of the time, this was till about 3 years ago. But grew my hair longer to just past my shoulders (it's also extremely thick & wavy) & found it difficult to color it myself all the time, so been getting the color done at a salon for the past 3 years or so.

Even though this stylist gives me a good price ($40) to do the hair color (she also has to leave the color in for almost an hour since my grey/white hair is so color resistant), this expense still adds up when you have to get hair color done every 4 weeks or so. So for that reason (plus getting tired of having to sit in the salon for over 2 1/2 hours each & every month), been thinking about trying to do the color myself again at home, would just have to touch up the roots every 3 weeks or so.

I still have packages of permanent hair color that I bought 3 - 4 years ago (Nice & Easy root touch-up, Revlon, etc.) and wondering if it would be OK to use these to start with instead of buying all new hair color products. Didn't see expiration dates or "sell-by" dates on these-- would it be a mistake to use them to color my hair & cover up my grey roots? Could they damage my hair? (Or maybe they would just be ineffective on my grey roots?) Is it possible that the "developer" would be alright, but not the actual hair shade? Would appreciate some feedback on this, would rather not throw out these packages if they can be used!

I wouldn't chance it. I remember my stylist telling me to always check the manufacture date when buying hair products and that often times it'll last up to three years from this date. Is there a date imprinted on the box?
