I heard this when they interviewed him on the TV show 'Sunday Morning" yesterday. I didn't find this strange, it just says to me that he's just a regular guy. Most guys I know cut their own hair or their wife cuts it for them.
You can tell he did it during his ER days. He must have used it without the attachment, then put the shortest attachment on the top to do it slightly longer on top.
I can tell when he's had his hair cut by a professional. And I can also tell when he could have done it with the flowbee. In the recent interview where he talks about it, his hair looks like it did in the mid 90's, only grayer now.
There have been tons of famous people who cut their own hair. Ted Koppel (used a thinning comb). Keith Richards. Steve Winwood. Those are just some of the ones I know who admitted in public.
It's really not that difficult to cut your own hair.
Very easy for man to cut his own hair with a little deftness of hand using Wahl clipper with attachments, a fixed mirror and one in hand. Once you get proficient you can do it with one mirror. I've been cutting my hair since my mid 20s. Think of all the money saved.
I guess depending oon your socio-cultural background you may miss out on the "Guy Talk" like in Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino or the Coen Brothers, The Man Who Wasn't with Billy Bob Thornton.
Or picture yourself as Clint Eastwood in barber chair in For A Few Dollars More (3:50)
I bet his wife doesn't cut her own hair although it must be easier to cut long hair than short
