My son is going to be stationed at Langley and we are looking for a place to stay when we visit. I need the scoop on what the surrounding beach areas are like. We want to find something on the beach that is quiet and safe. I see some great prices on places at Buckroe Beach and wondering what it's like there? We don't want to worry about our car being broken into while we sleep or a place where kids party all night.... Any suggestions or input is greatly appreciated!

A few older threads --- but I believe they are still fairly accurate. As one of the posters in the first thread indicates, Buckroe Beach is on the bay, not the ocean. When my family goes to the beach, we head to the outer banks of NC.

What is Buckroe Beach like?

In this general area (I am in Newport News), keep your cars locked and valuables out of sight. Breaking into cars seems to be a popular activity in HR.

Good luck.

Thanks. I think we have settled on the Yorktown area. Is that area better?

Yorktown has a beach, shops and good restaurants along with tall masted schooner cruises during tourist season, really worth the visit.

Thanks all. We made a quick trip down there last week to deliver my sons car to him. We made a stop in Yorktown for dinner and fell in love with the area!!! We will probably stay on base for quick trips but vacation will definitely be Yorktown!!!
