Despite our proximity to the ocean, fresh fish selection in Williamsburg is sadly limited.

Fresh Market used to be a good source, but lately it's been looking pretty bad.

Carino's Seafood on Ironbound Road is a nice family run store, but it is very small and they have a limited selection. If you call, they can often arrange to bring in what you need for the next day.

Bloom's seafood department looks ok, but I haven't purchased anything from them so I can't speak to quality.

Good luck and post if you find the kind of pristine seafood that you find in New York or New England!

Farm Fresh or Kroger has good fish as well for grocery stores.

A lot of the local seafood companies sell to the local grocery stores, so if you go to Ukrop's or Farm Fresh you're likely to get some decent stuff.

The catfish I bought and took to my brothers' house was raved over an over. They never saw shrimp so large and when we had "seafood night," it was a great family dinner.

I know I am not in Williamsburg BUT around here the best and freshest fish I have seen is at Harris Teeters....Do they have one of those there??

If any of you around the Strawbridge area want some good fish...head to Harris Teeter behind the courthouse...I go there just for the fish....We had sashimi grade tuna... to die for! And Alaskan salmon.. out of this world.... the shrimp looked great too....

Plenty of Harris Teeters in the HR area. But...there is a little seafood place near Sandbridge on PR road just before Nimmo. They have fresh catches as well as scallops and shrimp.

Most of the "Fresh Fish" in grocery stores, Harris Teeter, Farm Fresh, WalMart, Kroger, Bloom, etc. is actually previously frozen, so watch out for the disclaimers. If they do get some of it fresh, it's very hard to distinguish from the stuff that's trucked in, thawed out, and put on display. The fresh fish selection in this area is sadly limited. I usually just buy it frozen and thaw it out myself but I'm also still searching for a decent fresh fish market.

Find somebody with a boat. I currently have Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, and Flounder in my freezer.

And the good stuff hasn't come in yet.

I just tried Carino's Seafood at 4391 Ironbound Rd by Newtown yesterday. Its a hole in the wall place and small but has fresh seafood. The guy goes out daily and sells what he catches.
