I was reading of a story in 2009, where a police officer was attacked by a pit in Hawaii. As a reaction to it, there was talk of a bill to ban the pit bull from Hawaii.

As it's 2011, nearly 2012 now, did that fall through? Did it come to passing? What are people's takes on pitbulls in Hawaii?

What are people's takes on 'dogs' in particular in Hawaii? Popular? If so, what breeds?

Pitbulls are practically the state dog of Hawaii. I see more of them than any other breed. I'm pretty sure 99% of all Filipinos on Maui own 1) a jacked up Toyota Tacoma possibly with a pearlescent purple paint job, and b) a pit bull to ride in the bed

You forgot to mention the children and elderly in the back of the pick ups.

Dade county outlawed them years ago. 1st a warning then they take/kill the dog.

Dade county is where Miami is.

Banning pitbulls is ridiculous. They're really friendly dogs.

That will never happen. That would be like saying pig hunting outlawed. Not that all pit bulls pig dogs. Many many nice pit bulls around here. Stupid to ban a breed of dog, too bad you can't ban bad people owning dogs though...

Pit bulls don't kill people. Bad people who own pit bills kill people.

That will never happen if any official wants to get elected. Pitbulls are everywhere. Pitbulls and trucks go together.

I don't dislike pitbulls any more than any other breed. But if they got banned, I'd be fine with it since it will save a few people from getting mauled.

My view: the majority of people are willing to pay the price of potential maulings for the pleasure of having this breed around.

I don't think they're especially likely to maul, unless they're trained as fighting dogs. Part of their breeding is docility toward humans. I guess the one difference between them and the breeds everybody likes is they're so muscular.

I had hardly HEARD of pit bulls when this obviously homeless dog turned up on my porch in Waialua. I got attached to her and THEN someone told me she was a pitbull. I checked out every book on dogs and pit bulls in the Hawaii State Library (about 50) and did a lot of research before deciding to keep her. She turned out to be my dog of a lifetime. Wink is correct; the aggression toward humans has been bred out of them and they need training to be mean. Pit bulls are popular because of what they DON"T do; they don't bark, dig, shed, wander etc. There would be riots in the street if they ever tried to ban the breed in Hawaii. Warning: they make lousy watchdogs. Too friendly.
