Aloha! I am a young woman with two beautiful daughters, ages 14 and 11! I have a husband of 16 years! We currently reside in a hugh mountai. Town in colorado, a beautiful place, that we have loved for nearly 9 winters! Our family has lived many places, moving has been a normal way of life! We are considering making yet another move to Hawaii! We are her open and positive people that are looking for a differnt way of thinking peoples! Even though we have been mainlanders since birth we are very different than most. We tend not to follow American tradition and so are not finding the energy that makes us warm! We homeschool both our children, gave birth to them both at home
without docors or midwives, we do not celebrate the traditional holidays, we live peacefully and do everything we can to live in harmony with mother earth! I need a place where I can grow my own food, find a different yet open mind set, warm weather, love for earth, and peace! We think Hawaii sounds like the place because it is not connected to the mainland rather like ourselves in so many ways! I want to see new things, experience cultural diversity again, learn about new ways! I Belive I can transistoon with most anything, I am wondering two things? I want to move to the BI for adventure, should I have a place rented first or is it realistic to camp around everywhere, get to know the place find a spot that resonates with us and then rents? I need a place with space! Fruit trees in the yard, walking distance to ocean that has calm waters for swimming, I want to be an organic farmers and learn about native hawaii plant life, where I. The big island can I find this match! Are the other islands more suited for this sort of thing? I am looking g at the Hilo side yet the rainfall seems to be an issue! Does it rain all day everyday? I love the idea of rain for my gardens yet I need the sun it makes me happy! Do I need lots of money? I feel as though everything will just fall into place as I know how to manifest a positive existence! I feel this move to Hawaii sounds perfect, cleansing, adventerous, and most of all needed! I ha e read a lot about the spirit of aloha and I do not take the use of this term lightly as say a tourist getting off a plane, my family lives aloha even here in the mainland we just call it som ething else! I want to be a contributing positive energy in Hawaii and live in harmony with all differences that it has to offer! I am not big on tons of people, I like chance meeti be and spiritually meaningful conversations! What place on the islands resonates with this attitude the most? Any positive remarks are welcome, any help or info would be appreciated! We are just in the stages of research right now, our move would not take place until December or January of 2010! To all, have a beautiful day! Thanks for the help!

To me sounds like the North Shore of Kauai is better suited for you.

The north shore of kauai huh? Have yet to give that much thought as most of my research has been centered around the BI becasue it seems the cost of living is lower! Which in my case appeals to me. Can you elaborate more on Kauai? Thanks for your time!

You will be spending a great deal more money settling on Kauai then you would on the east side Big Island. I know, I have looked on every island and the Big Island regardless of money just seemed to fit us well. We just felt very comfortable with the area and the people there.

Heck we are already getting invited to outings and were not even there yet, that's nice.

I am sure what ever your decision is it sounds like you will be happy where ever you land.

Good luck to you

Not so sure about the Big Island but here on Kauai there are a lot of smallish farms specializing in organics. I live in Kilauea and quite a few of the parents who's kids go to my girls school are all farmers. There is quite a lot of people living here that follow the naturalist lifestyle.

The east side of the Big Island sounds like it will meet most of your requirements with one major exception--beaches within walking distance with calm areas for swimming.

If cost is a major factor, you may have to sacrifice access to the beach in order to have enough land to create the kind of home-site you want. But you can always drive about an a hour and a half to the Kohala Coast and enjoy a day at some amazingly beautiful beaches!!

I would suggest to either visit first or get a vacation rental for several weeks while you decide where to live. Vacation rentals are an easy first step since they usually come furnished.

I think Hilo might be the place for you! Although it does rain a lot! And, when it's not raining it's normally about to! But don't let that get you down! The constant rainfall has a tendency to soften things! That could come in really handy! Wish you all the best!

Aloha! and! Okolemaluna!
