For a brief instant I considered changing my Medicare Advantage Plan and sought the help of Medicare.gov online.
How does anyone make any sense of this website, especially us older people? There are 18 advantage plans in my area. There are 4 or 5 just under BC/BS. There are 3 in my current plan. Then there are a bunch of others with lower ratings.

Yes, you can compare a couple of them but it doesn't give you the details you need to make a decision. Like: are my docs in this plan? How much is a specialist? Are my generic drugs cheaper in this plan or another one?

After perusing this mess for an hour, I have given up and determined its better to stay with what I know. Its not just confusing, its intimidating.

You can get some details of the plans and their ratings. But if you want more details like the doctors in a certain plan you have to go to the particular Advantage plan itself in order to get that and other detailed plan info. The purpose of the Medicare find plan web site was to do just that, not describe all the details of the plans.

Find a Medicare broker in your area. They will walk you through it. You do not pay them to help you, it's free for you. You can also contact your local senior center or Ombudsman and they have people they can refer you to for help.

"It doesn't give you the details..." I have found this to be true in any kind of insurance. You don't get the facts until you pay your money. You have thirty days to cancel after you've read the policy - hoping, of course, that the policy was mailed to you in time to take advantage of that thirty days.

That said, there are two routes you can go. First, find a friend, neighbor or relative who is already on Medicare and ask to borrow their "Medicare & You" book for 2014. Second - and I speak only from personal experience here - there is a United Healthcare office at one of our shopping centers, right across from the post office. I dropped in there one day to ask the man a question about my plan. I got a very detailed and easy to understand explanation. We then talked about other things in these plans. He was quite clear on everything.

I am not saying that every UH office would have someone who explains so well. Just that this was my experience. Might be worth trying at whatever company you think you want.
