is it usual for the provider to have your insurance information but send to out of network labs? All blood work has been in network so never even thought pathology tests would be any different. $900 in bills was quite a surprise and a learning experience.

Providers take no responsibility for in-network/out-of-network. That's your job, unfortunately. Shouldn't be necessary for you to tell provider not to send out lab work until YOU check to be sure it's in-network, but such is the world of our screwy health system these days.

The provider has no way of knowing what insurance different labs are in-network with, especially when they can change day by day.

Thanks for the replies.

All our doctoring is with the same clinic/company and all other labs have been in network. Gotta say having stuff sent to a lab out of network threw me for an expensive loop.
