Because hubby is still working and this is employer insurance, he probably doesn't need to sign up for Medicare Part B at all, but he should check w/his employer to be sure. Medicare enrollment can be delayed, without penalty, until he retires and loses the employer insurance - provided employer has over 20 employees.
If he signs up now while still working and is not collecting SS benefits from which the premium is deducted, he will need to pay the Part B premium of $144.60/mo. Medicare usually bills this premium quarterly.
He should check w/his employer as to coverage once he reaches Medicare age. Most employer plans do not require Medicare enrollment for active employees.
Chances are whatever small savings might result from Medicare coverage will be offset by the premium paid.
Further, if your coverage allows for HSA tax-deductible deposits, enrollment in Medicare will disqualify tax-deductible HSA contributions.
Medicare won't conflict w/your private insurance. Generally (but not always), your employer coverage remains primary. Your insurer will coordinate payments w/Medicare.
