Hi all - Dh will be 65 next month on 3/22/2021. I will be 65 on 8/27/2023. We have very good private insurance. Dh has cataract surgery scheduled for March 3 and March 10 and we were planning to use our private insurance, even though there are copays, etc.

Should dh sign up for Medicare and have it pay for the surgery?

Is Medicare any threat to our private health care?

Is private insurance through hubby's employer or through the ACA?

His/our insurance is through his employer and it's BC/BS PPO.

Because hubby is still working and this is employer insurance, he probably doesn't need to sign up for Medicare Part B at all, but he should check w/his employer to be sure. Medicare enrollment can be delayed, without penalty, until he retires and loses the employer insurance - provided employer has over 20 employees.

If he signs up now while still working and is not collecting SS benefits from which the premium is deducted, he will need to pay the Part B premium of $144.60/mo. Medicare usually bills this premium quarterly.

He should check w/his employer as to coverage once he reaches Medicare age. Most employer plans do not require Medicare enrollment for active employees.

Chances are whatever small savings might result from Medicare coverage will be offset by the premium paid.

Further, if your coverage allows for HSA tax-deductible deposits, enrollment in Medicare will disqualify tax-deductible HSA contributions.

Medicare won't conflict w/your private insurance. Generally (but not always), your employer coverage remains primary. Your insurer will coordinate payments w/Medicare.

If it were me and my surgery was three weeks away, I'd use the private insurance.

It took CMS months to get my Medicare account up and running. To this day I'm still not sure what the problem was.
