I got five mosquito bites in just a few minutes on one of my feet yesterday and it swelled and got hot within an hour or two of it happening. It itches like crazy. There's edema too, but no soreness and the swelling hasn't gotten worse. Hasn't gotten better either. This has never happened to me before and when I Googled it, it kept throwing me into pages about mosquito bite allergies, which I don't think I have.

What gives? Should I be worried?

No other allergy symptoms though; no hives, no wheezing, none of that. And I got a couple more bites this morning, no swelling, no heat on those. I've had a bag of ice on my foot for a while trying to get it to feel better, so far no improvement. I have a compress that's in the freezer right now, I'm going to sleep with it on tonight.

Taka a dozen antihistamines, like Benadryl (store brand will do -- they're OTC). Then one every 4-6 hours, until the symptoms subside.

Might not be mosquito bites, but some other crittur that you didn't know you're allergic to.

To the OP, if you take any OTC med be sure to read the dosing instructions on the package. Don't take something just because someone on the interent told you to do that !

If you need guidance than speak to a pharmacist.

If your foot feels that bad than see a doctor. Never be afraid to go to the ER if you feel something isn't right.

Better safe than sorry !

You can have a severe localized reaction with swelling, pain, itching, heat, etc. and not have hives or wheezing or anything like that. Every time you're exposed to an allergen, your body's reaction to it can increase, so even if you weren't allergic before, it's possible that you developed an allergy.

A doctor will probably prescribe an oral steroid for it...prednisone or prednisolone or something along those lines. That will make it feel better a lot sooner than just waiting for your body to get over it. Benadryl will probably not do much for it.

If you go to a doctor, he will probably give you an injection of antihistamine, to get a large dose working quickly. If you go to a pharmacist, he will tell you what I did -- take a large dose of Benadryl, which is perfectly safe as long as you do not have another medical condition or other Rx usage that contra-indicates it. A pharmacist will probably even tell you that on the phone.

Benadryl is an OTC preparation, no Rx required. The bottle is labeled for up to 12 capsules per day as a safe dosage.

I slept with a cold compress strapped to my foot and the swelling is MUCH better this morning. It's still warm to the touch and itches like hell, but it has improved a lot. I'll add Benadryl to the shopping list in case this happens again. Thanks for the suggestions y'all!

You should probably have a small bottle of Bactine in the house, wherever you keep your first aid stuff (we keep ours in the hallway closet near the bathroom). Bactine will relieve a lot of the itch. If you don't want to buy Bactine, but already have tea tree oil, use tiny amounts of that instead. Just saturate a q-tip and touch the moistened cotton to each bite. You don't have to rub it, just apply gentle pressure so it soaks into the middle of the bite. That relieves itch and pain, plus it's a natural antibiotic and antiseptic which will help prevent infection (bites *can* get infected, especially if you scratch!).
