I am having an umbilical hernia surgery in next week. How long we should stay in hospital after the surgery? Please share your comments.

Hubby has had about 3 hernia surgeries: the one that was umbilibal, was a little detailed because they couldn't do lapascopic, he had too much scar tissue from another surgery, even then he was in the hospital only 48 hours and would have come home in 24 had they been able to do lapascopic. It depends on the patient and his/her attitude as well as other things.

Default RE:How long we need to stay in hospital after a hernia surgery?

I had my umbilical hernia surgery last month in Shouldice Hospital of Canada. It was an overnight surgery and I went home the next day itself. I think the time of stay depends upon your age and severity of hernia. I am in my 50’s.

you are probably right, but I do think 24 hours is normal: when hubby had his other hernia surgery, not umbilibal, it was outpatient. bTW, I am not sure about the age related situation: we are in our mid 70s, still he was in and out in no time.

Hubby had that surgery as an outpatient....they sent him home 6 hours after surgery. BUT....it became infected, so total healing time was GREATLY extended. Never again would we do that!!!

That was the same with my hubby: we went home almost as soon as he came out of recovery. It was amazing. As I have mentioned, the umbilical one was longer cause of all the scar tissue from cancer surgery a few months before. Even though he stayed a day or so, he did fine and was up and doing almost everything in a couple of days. OP, don't worry, the surgury, though major in a way really isn't all that involved. Good luck,

Nita

I am sorry you experienced those complications, but it is quite possible it would have become infected even if he had stayed in the hospital.

you are right, there is nothing that would have prevented the infection, in or out of the hospital..Generally, unless there is a lot of pain we do better recooperating at home.

It depends on the severity of the problem. Generally, hernia surgery would take an average duration of one hour. The patient would be given a mild sedation an hour prior to surgery. After the surgery, they are supposed to take rest for four hours. They are encouraged to walk and start recovery.

Most patients can get back to their regular works in less than a week. However, ask your doctor.
