I have a mean knot on my left back shoulder and the only thing that alleviate the discomfort is a deep tissue massage. I tried foam rollers, tennis balls but to no avail. Stretching helps but I feel like I need to stretch for hours to get any results.
It depends upon how sensitive you are to sensation.I lay down upon a towel with a golf ball beneath each knot. Since it is a ball it makes it easy to roll about to get beyond the edges of the knot. I also have had a family member use an elbow on my knots, but I am accustomed to deep tissues massages. If you are in the least uncertain about your knot please see a health care professional first. I know my knots, so I have no problems manipulating mine.
A nice, hot compress will help if you use one before and after massaging the area. I hope you feel better soon.
Yes; I also have one under my left shoulder. it was probably exacerbated when I fell and broke my left humerus and tore my rotator cuff. I usually use the corner of a doorframe to "massage" it, as it is the only thing hard enough to get deep into the tissue. I have had trigger point injections into the knot, but had to quit as I was getting huge black-and-blue bruises all over that side of my back after the injections.
Fortunately for me, stretching and the firm rubber-ball, on the wall, helps a LOT.
A tennis-ball may be a little too soft to properly work your knots, YMMV!
