Hello, I have been told in the past 2 years that my cholesterol levels are high, and I don't necessarily think I have a bad diet, but get a high reading annually. My most recent one was Total :274, HDL:56, LDL 208, Triglycerides 48, VLDL 10. My doctor said my numbers were high enough to start medication. I would like to explore other options first, or do you think my numbers are really bad that I need medication? TIA

You don't think you have a bad diet, or you don't have a bad diet?

Have you tried logging all your food in an app like myfitnesspal to see what you are really consuming? How about exercise?

My husband was told this during a period of inactivity

He's been active ever since

Buy a bicycle. Ride for 1 hr each day

You will see a significant difference

It is also said that oatmeal combats high cholesterol

eat like a bodybuilder and then exercise. Small meals, balance of macronutrients. Avoid excess fructose because it will cause NAFLD over time.. so NO FRUIT JUICE.. there is no healthy "juice" .. eat the whole fruits in moderation. No agave. No sugar, which is 50% fructose, 50% glucose.. no honey, no maple syrup, etc. No eating a half watermelon or 6 bananas per day for weeks on end.

Stick with grains and starches for your carbohydrate when possible, salads, etc.

No deep fried crap. No massive meals full of both carbohydrate and fat. (Fries, Donuts, Hot Pockets) Portion size is important if you're going to eat things like pizza, crackers, etc because carbs are addicting and crackers are loaded with MSG which tastes just delicious.

Sadly to say, genetics plays just as much a role as diet. Though I do exercise, I eat lots of junk food and still manage to have a cholesterol of like 130, with an HDL that is often higher than the LDL on my readings. If you have inferior genetics, I'm sorry.

Most of the time it is not because of genetics. And it is not because of red meat either. It is mostly because of refined carbohydrates, artificial ingredients, and not enough exercise.

If you don't get much exercise, that could completely explain it. Your doctor is WRONG to try medication first!

274 with LDL (bad cholesterol) >200 is HIGH!

If you don't want your chest ripped open like mine was at age 46, listen to your doc and start a statin!

My total cholesterol was 120 at my last physical. HDL (good cholesterol) 75. I take Crestor and Zetia (Been on them since my early 50s (started on Mevacor, then Lipitor and now Crestor.

I exercise 3 days a week and try to watch what I eat.
