I think I do my best thinking when I wake up in the middle of the night...last night the thought of this "you are normal, your numbers are normal" came to my mind. I've been that route for 10 yrs for sure with thyroid. There is low normal, there is mid normal and high normal...but the doctors just tell patients they are normal. We are not normal, we are all unique and each one of us has a lot of missing pieces and especially with aging. So much is depleting with our aging bodies. I can name a few but I know this is not the Alt Med board so I'll refrain but hopefully one can think what is missing in their bodies regardless of the normal mantra. Some help can do some wonders.

Always insist on seeing your actual lab results. This is easier now since many offices have portals so you can get all the detail online rather than from a nurse over the phone who only says "normal". You're right that there can be low or high normal and that might be worth knowing about.

I have all my labs for years. And I'll be requesting hard copies of the ones taken last week. Regardless of the portal thing.

There is no single number for a blood test that is "normal". It is always reported as a reference range, the range may vary with the lab doing the test, and every number inside that range is "normal". It is usually based on testing a large number of healthy people and may vary by age, sex, race, and other factors, including pregnancy.

A single TSH level is next to useless if you have thyroid problems. You need a thyroid panel.

The other important aspect is CHANGE. A single result of a blood panel gives a snapshot of current condition. Monitoring over time is going to pick up a trend that may end up being life-saving. That's what repeated testing is for.

Yup - I have all my lab results back 15 years in a spreadsheet with everything graphed over time and color-coded on whether it is in-range or not.

Well, that works for you, I have mine in a stack and pull them out if I want to check back. I'm not a spreadsheet person. Whatever works.

On these range issues I guess I was thinking more about say potassium..I know low potassium levels can cause more fatigue and with another friend we've worked with this for a long time. The potassium range is 3.5-5.2 and I've always come in at the 4's. And I've had my share of lack of energy and think about potassium. In the last months I've been taking extra potassium and eating more avocados and last lab showed 5.2 and I like it there. It will be interesting to see what last labs show.

I know about toxicity and I don't want to hear that.

As I've said everyone's body is so unique and to give lab range rules for everyone is hard to fathom.

And our RDA's are so low..except suprising on the potassium RDA.
