It the vaccine turns out to be a cure or at least a deterrent, that would be wonderful. Just think of all the people this could help.
Probably won't be a cure per se. The damage to the brain has already been done. But it could be like taking insulin for diabetes. If taken early enough it would arrest the progression / prevent further damage / maintain existing functionality. As most Alzheimer's is late in life it would virtually wipe out any debilitating effects and preserve a life worth living until you stop waking up in the morning.

Yea, great. Now even more people will be alert enough to realize they're getting old and falling apart
Are we now treating Alzheimer's patients with HIV drugs, or have we been treating HIV patients with Alzheimer's drugs all these yrs and just didn't know it?

You're right. It won't reverse the damage. I'd like to think it could be a deterrent for future risk, if someone has the gene (as described in the article) that could lead to early onset Alzheimer's (meaning those under 60 years of age). People who are older are often times labeled as having AD when, in fact, they have a form of dementia, brought on by a stroke or anesthesia induced (as was the case of my mother). Yet, in today's medicine, all forms of dementia are labeled as Alzheimer's and that's simply not the case. (My mother's death certificate names Alzheimer's Disease as her cause of death but it wasn't true AD) Nevertheless, a vaccine that could help prevent the disease from forming (outside of other causes as I mentioned) would be so great.

Your attempt at humor is duly noted. As for an HIV drug being used for something other than HIV, think of it this way. Viagra was discovered to be a great solution for ED when it was originally intended to treat heart disease. You never know what little gem is discovered in a field of science.

"Treatment with a combination of at least three antiretroviral drugs often prevents cognitive impairments worsening and, for many people, can reverse the cognitive damage caused by HIV."
