As you may know, I've had hiccups for months, now, and even though I've been to the doctor many times, they can find no physical cause for this curse I'm saddled with. It's not acid reflux, not a tumor, not a hernia, not electrolytes, and not nerves. Yet, I'm going hic-hic-hic and its hurting me at work since they started cutting my hours way down. I can no longer afford these expensive doctors visits, and I have tried all kinds of home remedies to stop these hiccups, but they will not go away. What other CHEAP thing can I try?

It's not that I'm unwilling to spend more money to fix the problem, I'm just not able.

Are you taking any prescription drugs ? Particularly dexamethasone ?

I started having non-stop hiccups after being prescribed dexamethasone after a tooth extraction. Took a a day or two to make the connection, and stop the drug, whereupon the hiccups stopped.

Found that hiccups are listed as a "rare" side effective of the drug.

Good luck with a fix. Mine were hell for the 2 days. Could not carry on a conversation.

Did the hiccups start sometime after starting Nexium ?

Take a look at https://www.drugs.com/sfx/nexium-side-effects.html

Scroll down to the Health Professional Section.

Find hiccup under Uncommon 0.1% - 1%.

Also see Is HICCUPS a side effect of NEXIUM ? ( FactMed.com )

You might be in the 1% like I was with dexamethasone.

I actually started Nexium since I started having acid reflux at the same time I started having hiccups. The doctor thought the reflux could be causing the hiccups. I took Nexium and it cured the reflux but not the hiccups.

Could your doctor prescribe you Chlorpromazine? It's used as a treatment for chronic hiccups. I'd definitely save it for a last resort, but if you've tried other things and you can't find a cause, it may be time to go that route. It shouldn't be very expensive, especially if you have insurance. If not, an independent pharmacy should be able to sell it to you at a relatively low cost.

I dunno if in your case it will work but try holding your breath for 30 seconds and see if it stops them (Even if just for a short while)

Reg hiccups you can stop usually by holding your breath 30 seconds......

Good luck
