This might be the beginning of the end of Covid..

Omicron is genetically mixed up with the common cold virus.

More transmissible and apparently far less lethal.

If this holds out, and as it appears this thing will spread like wildfire, the world might soon be naturally vaxed by this gentler variant. Not to mention it might out compete all the others much to their detriment.

Anything could happen, like a real bad mixup down the line, but keep your fingers crossed. .

Here is a link to the cold DNA being in Omicron variant.
Quote:
Venky Soundararajan, a co-author of the study said the "striking" similarity between Omicron and HCoV-229E could have led the variant to be "more accustomed to human hosts" and more likely to evade immune responses.

Thanks for the link. I found this one linked to the one you shared. Of course they're not saying it's a vaccine failure, it may be a vaccine success. Vaccinated with 2 and a booster are getting it.

Omicron variant cases identified in at least 12 states but Delta still dominates

Quote:
While at least 12 states have identified cases of the Omicron coronavairus variant, US health officials remain concerned about the Delta version that accounts for practically all new infections.

Cases of the newest coronavirus variant were identified by late Friday in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Utah, according to health officials.

One Omicron case, in Minnesota, was in a resident who had a Covid-19 booster and health officials are trying to understand more about it, according to Walensky.

"It is helpful to understand that this person had mild symptoms that have, to my understanding, resolved pretty swiftly," she added. "So this may very well be actually a story of vaccine success, and not necessarily one of vaccine failure."

Omicron carries a stretch of genetic material that looks like it may have come from a distant relative that causes the common cold, researchers said Friday.

An analysis of the many mutations that characterize the new variant shows a long stretch that looks like what's called an insertion -- a piece of genetic material that could have been taken straight from another virus or possibly even a bacteria or a human cell, according to the researchers.

It's still too early to conclude whether Omicron leads to milder illnesses overall, Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the World Health Organization, said on Friday.

In the wild, or in a lab ?

That's not the topic.

I hope this virus is mild and I Truly hope and pray that if it is, that it overtakes all the others. If it doesn't win out, then we're back where we started from with new versions turning up all the time.

We can hope it causes just mild symptoms, while providing all kinds of immunogenic sites on its little virus self ( from the mutations it's gone through) for the immune system to build up enough natural immunity to last through eons of covid visits to mankind.

I'm convinced that's the only way to go now, IMO the thing is here to stay, to take its place among the gazillions of other viruses around, among, and within us.

IMO it could well have happened naturally. Viruses do that.

Speculation, of course, but that's mine.

Hopefully, this is correct!

Dr. Francis Collins alluded to the fact that in a best case scenario, the Omicron could act like you describe, but more real world data of how people respond to Omicron is needed. Also, even if Omicron is mild, Delta is still heavily prevalent and causing damage.
