The Madison-based company behind Prevagen — a nutritional supplement claiming to promote brain health — has been under fire from the Food and Drug Administration for more than 10 years, according to reporting by Wired magazine.

Quincy Bioscience, which makes the supplement, made inaccurate or misleading claims about Prevagen, failed to establish written procedures to test for bacteria and didn't specify how it controls production to ensure a quality end product of the supplements, Wired reported through records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

It also received thousands of complaints about adverse side effects, many of which went uninvestigated.

This is why all products sold for human consumption needs to be clinical tested for safety and efficacy

"This is why all products sold for human consumption needs to be clinical tested for safety and efficacy"

That's a pretty bold statement considering that fast food is potentially more dangerous for humans to consume than a lot of the "supplements" on the market, some of which have been consumed for thousands of years without being clinically tested.

Of course, the fast food has been clinically tested and determined to be detrimental towards health, and it's allowed to be sold anyway. Supplement makers don't get that same treatment. They are just yanked from the open markets, creating black ones.

Whenever choosing to support more government regulation or freedom of people to do their own research and make their own choices, so long as it's not harming anybody else the answer should always be freedom.

You do realize that not all fast food is junk food, don't you?

Restaurants are inspected for cleanliness and safe food handling practices.

Many "supplements" do not even contain what they claim to, and some contain substances - even prescription drugs - not included on the label.

Consumption for "thousands of years" is no guarantee of safety or effectiveness.

Correct. Just like all the companies that sold tested and regulated ranitidine (Zantac) in a form that caused cancer, and now the late night TV ads are telling everybody which lawyers to call to get their big payouts.

"Consumption for "thousands of years" is no guarantee of safety or effectiveness."

True that! Just like Johnson and Johnson knowingly selling talcum powder with asbestos in it and giving people cancer.

Just because something is "regulated" doesn't mean that greedy regulated slimeballs aren't going to kill people over a couple of dollars.

Those supplement makers are not greedy though. They just give their products away.

Brand really matters with supplements, many on Amazon I have never heard of. Im sure some of them are great products, but if you are going to put it in your mouth, do some research.

Many quality reviews like this one for multivitamins at thehealthbeat.com

From another thread

Professional vs Consumer brands - consumer grade doesnt always = bad.

Livestrong
